Amnesty International

Our Amnesty International Group is one of the largest student groups in the country, bringing together girls from U3 to U6. The group meets regularly to write letters of protest to Heads of State protesting human rights abuses. The Amnesty Sixth Form leaders also organise regular debates to discuss important issues and hold assemblies to promote awareness of topical subjects. They also regularly invite prominent speakers, such as local MPs, in to school to talk to the Group. This broadens everyone’s appreciation of the wider world community.

One of our most important goals each year is to create awareness of a global human rights issue. Past campaigns have highlighted such issues as human trafficking and genocide in Darfur.

The group also fundraises in support of Amnesty International and other human rights causes and in the past has raised over £2000 for Fund4Dafur. The school was visited by representatives of the national organisation to raise awareness of the genocide happening in the Darfur region and we were joined by members of the Harewood Community.

Each year, the group supports AI’s Christmas Card campaign, where recycled cards are used to create new cards for over 50 political prisoners throughout the world.

Our two Lower Six Amnesty International Group leaders have recently been accepted as members of Amnesty International UK's Youth Advisory Group. Each year Amnesty International UK recruits a small number of youth group members to give their views on the AIUK's campaigns, mailings and website and to help them encourage other young people to become involved in Amnesty. This gives the girls a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with other students from around the country when they attend the three meetings which are held each year at various venues, the first being at Amnesty's Human Rights Action Centre in London.
