Carbon Footprint Project
As part of Science Week, the Gateways School Environment Club set itself the challenge of turning Gateways into a carbon neutral school.
The club will focus initially on energy efficiency around the school and offset any remaining carbon emissions by investing money in renewable energy plants and planting trees which will absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The environment club is also inviting the wider school community to join the project by offering them the opportunity to have their households’ carbon footprint calculated. By providing some simple information, the environment club will calculate how many tonnes of carbon dioxide are produced by each household. The service includes:
• A calculation of household carbon emissions
• A calculation of travel (by car, bus, rail and air) carbon emissions
• Suggestions for improving home energy efficiency
• Suggestions for improving travel efficiency
• The estimated cost of offsetting these emissions.
A nominal cost is being charged for the service. The money raised from this venture will be used to help Gateways become a carbon neutral school. For further information, please contact Dr Sara Newton on 0113 288 6345.
