Environment Initiative
Gateways School was the first High School in Leeds to be awarded green flag environmental status with Eco-Schools.
This award acknowledges the efforts of the girls involved in the school environment club, Recyclers at Gateways School (RAGS), and their ‘outstanding achievement in sustainable development education and management, continuously improving the environmental performance of the school and the wider community.’
The girls have focused on recycling paper, cardboard waste and plastic cups within the school and have held numerous community events to recycle clothing, shoes, spectacles and other items.
Most recently RAGS club members set themselves the challenge of turning Gateways into a carbon neutral school.
In addition to this the environment club members have raised money to erect a greenhouse in the school grounds and are now actively involved in cultivating the Gateways School garden. It is hoped that the home grown vegetables will be served in the school dining room any day soon, providing the school with some carbon neutral healthy eating.
