Academic
‘At Gateways we aim to inspire individuals and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. To support them with this, we have a curriculum designed to give all pupils access to a wide range of subjects and activities, providing them with an appropriate, balanced and challenging educational experience. We are committed to academic excellence whilst providing a personal educational experience. To further enrich our pupils experience we have a wide and varied range of extra-curricular activities.’
Mrs Colette McDermott
The school curriculum is in line with, but not restricted by, the National Curriculum and is both broad and challenging. Girls usually take GCSEs in nine subjects.
Faculties
Subjects are organised into four faculties: Science and Mathematics, Humanities, Classical and Modern Language and Creative Arts.
The Science and Mathematics faculty is made up of the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and is based in the new Schofield Building which houses state-of-the-art laboratories.
Humanities is a large and diverse faculty that includes the traditional humanities subjects, such as English, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Psychology. Most of the humanities subjects are taught in the Dower House, the traditional heart of the school.
The Classical and Modern Language Faculty, as its name suggests, embraces languages both ancient and modern and Classic Civilisation: Latin and Ancient Greek are offered as well as French, German and Spanish. Classical languages are taught in Watson while Modern Languages are housed in the language suite in the new Schofield building where each language has its own dedicated room. A state of the art multi-media language laboratory is shared by modern and classical languages.
The Creative Arts Faculty includes the widest variety of subjects: Art, Information and Computer Technology (ICT), Drama, Technology, Music and PE. The faculty enjoys the use of excellent facilities including a multi-purpose sports hall and fitness room, art studios, Performing Arts Centre and drama studio, and music and food technology rooms. All areas incorporate ICT within their schemes of work using the ICT facilities across the school.
Information about each subject (for example, examination board, subjects covered and examinations) can be found in this Portable Document File (PDF), which can be viewed online or downloaded by clicking here.
