Involvement in the Local Community
We encourage girls to get involved in our local community through various initiatives.
We have established links with Harewood Primary School and each fortnight, students from our Lower VI visit the school in a mentoring programme which we hope will bring benefits to both parties. Similarly, as part of a Junior Sports Award qualification, girls from Lower V help to organise games and sports activities with children at the school. The school is also invited to attend performances of our Prep and High School productions in the Performing Arts Centre.
During the recent GreenStitch Knit-in, members of the local community as well as representatives from other local organisations were invited to join our girls as they knitted plastic bags and old tights into mobile phone holders and bags as part of their successful environmental initiative.
Our relationship with Follifoot Park Disabled Riders Group has not only focused on fundraising. Girls have given their time to volunteer with rides at the stables and last Christmas, we were involved with various activities with the charity. Towards the end of term various ICT groups designed posters for the FPDRG Nativity Play and Carol Singing and these were gratefully received. On the 20th December, over 45 girls gave up their time to help pack bags at Morrisons supermarket in Wetherby and as well as gaining many compliments on their politeness and poise, they helped to raise almost £1,200. On the 3rd January, a group of girls from Lower and Upper Four narrated the annual Follifoot Nativity Play at the stables as disabled riders enacted the traditional story. Throughout the year, our school journalists have helped to produce the newsletter that FPDRG distributes to its supporters and we are intending to continue helping the charity in this way.
