Pastoral
Pastoral care is an acknowledged strength of the school. We believe that, in partnership with parents, we have a significant role to play in the social and moral education of the children as well as helping them enjoy school life in our community. Form teachers take responsibility for the day-to-day care of the children. Effective communication enables us to respond quickly and put in place strategies to sort out any problems. We follow a ‘clean sheet’ approach, which gives children the opportunity to resolve issues and move on in a positive way. We have well-defined policies covering all aspects of our pastoral care.
We expect all pupils to behave appropriately. There is a code of conduct, which is respected by the children. The school’s policy of ‘assertive discipline’ seeks to ensure the safety of everyone at all times and encourage self-discipline, a sense of responsibility for one’s own actions and responsiveness to and respect for the needs of others.
Our house system combines a strong sense of belonging with many opportunities for personal development. It actively promotes self-esteem. We take every opportunity to acknowledge success, achievement, effort and progress in all areas of the children’s development. Children are awarded house points for personal achievement, good endeavour, progress, positive behaviour, showing initiative, loyalty and general contribution to school life, inside and outside the classroom.
Gateways is a broadly based Christian foundation. Our assemblies reflect our multi-faith culture. We use this forum to present ethical and moral issues. There is a weekly merit assembly during which merit badges are awarded for a variety of achievements. Here we also celebrate success achieved outside school.
Head of Preparatory Commendations are awarded to children who produce work of an outstanding level for them. These badges are awarded at the termly whole school awards assemblies. The badges are highly prized and can be worn for the child’s time in the Preparatory school.
