Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) includes all those opportunities and experiences made available by the school to allow its pupils to develop in a well-balanced way.
At Gateways we aim to use these experiences collectively so that each pupil can:
-
move from childhood through adolescence to young adulthood with support and guidance
-
develop the confidence and skills to approach adulthood
-
develop responsible independence
-
be aware of others and their needs
-
develop individual talents
Therefore within the overall PSHE provision there is a structure and range of experiences which will encourage the personal and social development of our pupils. PSHE embraces all aspects of school life and therefore every member of staff has a contribution to make to its successful implementation; not just the teaching staff. Governors and parents also have an important role to play in actively supporting the ethos of the school.
Every pupil learns about herself, her strengths and weaknesses, her time management and organisation. She develops a progress file, which encourages her to be proud of her achievements and to be involved with her own progress. Learning about health, careers and citizenship, in lessons, assemblies and themed weeks gives an opportunity for every pupil to be knowledgeable so that her decisions are well informed. Pupils are encouraged to think carefully about how to relate successfully with others. They are given varied opportunities to be challenged and succeed so that confidence and competence are developed and thus self esteem.
