Spanish
Club
Pupils from Reception upwards can join
the Spanish club, run by Mrs Debbie Brown, which
takes place in School on Thursday afternoons.
Pupils in Reception to Lower I attend from 3.15pm
to 4.00pm and girls from Upper 1 to Lower 3 attend
for an hour from 4.00pm to 5.00pm.
Country Dancing
The
Country Dancing club takes place in the lunch hour
for any Prep girls who wish to join. This is an
opportunity for the girls to learn a range of
dances, many of them traditional English ones such
as the Pat-a-cake Polka and Brighton Camp, but
also some from other countries across Europe and
America. In the Summer Term the girls move on to
maypole dancing, mastering the art of weaving the
ribbons round the pole. The year ends with a
performance to parents and visitors at the
school's annual Exhibition Day.
Chess Club
We are now into our third year of chess at
Gateways. It is a well-attended lunchtime club for
about 30 girls. The club caters for everyone from
absolute beginners to confident players. It is
held primarily for Lower III (Year 6) with Upper
II (Year 5) joining in the Summer Term.
Each year we have participated in the British
Chess Challenge. This is a competition which
begins in school with the girls playing each other
over 7 matches. There are prizes for achieving a
certain level of points. The overall winner
receives the school trophy. The highest scorers
are then invited to take part in the next stage
competing with other winners from the West
Yorkshire area.
We are also starting to participate in local
tournaments with neighbouring schools. Players of
any ability can take part and a number of our
girls have competed successfully and
enthusiastically.
