Prep School Council

The Prep School Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way Gateways is run. It provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings to teachers and staff as well as to influence decisions that are made.

The School Council is made up of representatives from each class (who have been elected by other classmates), the Headgirl, Deputy Headgirl and the PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) co-ordinator. Representatives change termly and each representative receives a badge. It is the responsibility of each councillor to ensure that they express both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent. Each rep has a book to record the opinions of their class and brings it along to the meeting.

Meetings take place fortnightly and orange and biscuits are served. Each representative has a chance to read out the views and ideas of their class. We try to think of ways to implement some of their suggestions. Minutes of the meetings are taken and distributed to the reps who then report back to their class what was discussed and agreed.

Topics such as the following have been raised:-

  • Purchasing playground equipment

  • Lunch and the dining facilities

  • School uniform

  • Carpark

  • Fundraising activities

Many of the pupils’ ideas have been implemented e.g. improved toilet facilities, use of water bottles in school, change of menu and the introduction of butter and sauces, new ways to fundraise, new playground equipment, introduction of Buddies and Buddy box and changes to the Wellington boots area.
