In the Prep School we offer a wide variety of
sporting extra curricular activities both during
and after school time. We encourage all pupils to
participate and come along and 'have a go'.
Hockey
Hockey club is on Monday lunchtime and is offered
to Upper II and Lower III. We are starting to play
matches against local schools. All pupils are
encouraged to Hockey a go.
Football
Football has been recently introduced in both
Pre-Prep and Juniors and has had an enthusiastic
reception.
Gymnastics
Pupils are given the opportunity to attend Gym
Club once a week. Gymnastics is offered to each
year group in turn. Pupils are taught a range of
skills including: balancing, leaping, jumping and
a wide variety of movements and they are also
given the opportunity to choreograph their own
routines. They can perform alone, in pairs or in
groups.
Cross
Country and Athletics
Cross Country is held on Monday lunchtimes for
Lower III and Upper II. The club participates in
the Leeds Schools Cross Country League which is
organised by the Leeds Schools Athletics
Association. In the 2003/2004 seasons, Gateways
achieved first or second place in every race and
the team are performing well again this year. In
the summer term, girls also have the opportunity
to participate in Athletics.
Swimming
The girls attend swimming lessons for one term
during the year and are split into groups
according to their ability. Three Amateur Swimming
Association qualified coaches determine the
criteria for each group. Each group is making good
progress. We encourage pupils to enter swimming
galas and competitions as much as possible and
arrange fixtures against local schools. During
2004-2005 Gateways entered the Bazuka Swimming
Championships. The team came 1st in the Yorkshire
and Lancashire regional competition and went on to
the National Finals in Sheffield.
Vaulting
Since September 2004, training has been held twice
a week from to introduce vaulting skills to a
fresh group of girls in Upper II and Lower III. An
additional session has been included to
concentrate on advanced vaulting and gymnastic
skills. The whole vaulting squad presented a
Christmas Angels assembly in December 2005 and
future presentations are planned.
Sports and Games
On Wednesdays after school, Pre-Prep children have
the opportunity to take part in the Sports and
games club. It is designed to give Pre-Prep
Children a greater opportunity to develop
physically as well as mentally through a variety
of activities including parachute games, football
and team games. The children are encouraged to
develop team-working skills as they work together
in a fun, relaxed environment.
Yogabugs
This is offered as an extra curricular activity
designed for children age two and a half to seven
years old. The children are led through creative
stories and exciting activities that stimulate
their imagination and help maintain their natural
flexibility, whilst enjoying a variety of safe
postures. The children sing songs, play games and
work together. The Stories involve a wonderful
combination of stretches, back arches and
balances; these combine to support and strengthen
children not only physically but mentally, by
building self confidence, improving concentration
and beginning to realise the benefits of
relaxation.
