The Junior Years

For girls aged 7 to 11, the Junior department offers a happy and purposeful setting in which they respond to our high expectations with excellent behaviour, high levels of personal achievement and growing confidence. We value each girl’s talents and strengths and encourage creativity, independent thinking and self-motivation in all areas of school life.

We follow a broad, balanced curriculum giving our pupils the chance to follow the National Curriculum, as well as extend them in other areas. Girls are taught specialist music, ICT, modern foreign languages and Latin. At the end of Year 6 girls take National SATs in English, Maths and Science. These are externally moderated. Girls continually perform above the national average.

We promote learning through activity and first-hand experience and there are many opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Each year group has the chance to go on a residential visit. Hadrian’s Wall, Cranedale outdoor pursuits centre and London are all popular destinations with the girls. ICT is integral to the curriculum and its use is supported by superb facilities including laptops, interactive whiteboards and a permanent broadband connection to the Internet.

As they move through the school, the girls take on greater responsibilities such as membership of the School Council or assisting in the Pre-Prep. Respect and consideration for others is at the heart of the school’s sense of community. Parents are also an important part of that community and we keep them involved with weekly newsletters as well as individual comments in the homework diary.

On leaving the Juniors, almost all of our pupils remain at Gateways and regular liaison with the High School ensures a smooth transition at the age of 11.
