Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is integral to the learning process. Teachers continually use their professional judgment and expertise to identify formative assessment opportunities. The techniques of observation, questioning, marking, reporting and evaluating are part of this process. Assessment provides a basis for the sharing of success between pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community. It is a continuous process by which teachers find out about their pupils’ capabilities and achievements. Assessment is used to identify future targets for the class, group and individual as appropriate, and to identify children’s strengths and weaknesses.

Assessment in all subjects is ongoing, but assessment weeks in English and Maths occur twice each year, in November and May.

The national Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) are taken towards the end of Lower I (Year 2) and Lower III (Year 6). These are made up of both teacher assessment and written test components in Maths, English and Science.

We track a number of aspects of schooling as pupils progress through their education with the help of PIPS (Performance Indicators in Primary Schools.) This testing allows us to track and monitor carefully the progress of every individual pupil. We gather data using assessment materials that are quick and easy to administer. These data are processed at Durham University and the results passed back to the school. The results allow us to look objectively at the progress and attitudes of our pupils.

We have an ‘open door’ policy and parents are welcome to arrange time to discuss their child’s progress at any time throughout the year. Progress reviews are provided in the Autumn and Spring terms and formal parent consultations are arranged. A detailed summative report is sent to parents in the Summer term
