The Junior Curriculum

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which is both stimulating and enjoyable for the girls. We cover the National Curriculum, adding elements such as French from year 3 and Latin in year 6. Our teaching is exciting and well structured, addressing the needs of every child in our planning. The children are encouraged to become independent learners, confident in their own skills and the appropriate use of all resources including ICT.

There are 40 forty minute lessons during the week. Some of these may be double lessons to accommodate the requirements of certain subjects. English and Maths are taught every morning. The children start work at 8. 50 following registration at 8.45. Assembly is held after lunch to allow for the best academic use of the morning time in school when pupils’ concentration is at its peak.

There are two parallel classes in each year group of mixed ability. There is setting for Maths and English to enable effective teaching for every child. Although the children are taught a number of  subjects by their form teachers, we draw on the strengths and interests of the staff to provide specialist teaching in many areas. PE and Music are taught by well qualified specialist teachers.

The subjects taught at Junior level are: English, Maths, Science, Art, Design and Technology, French, Geography, History, Religious Education, ICT, Latin, Music, Physical Education, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education).

We place great importance on reading and the development of good reading practice. To this end we have our powerful OWLS (Our Wonderful Literary Scheme) incentive scheme. Children gain points as they read books. These points lead to awards of OWLS certificates.

Homework provides valuable consolidation of work covered during the day. It is planned to ensure a balance of subjects and workload throughout the week.
