Three years ago, Gateways School was approached by D of E North Region and asked to open up a D of E Centre that would be able to accommodate any student from the local community and surrounding areas, in order for them to participate in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
The Open Award Centre now offers all three levels of Award – Bronze, Silver Gold, to external students from areas such as Harrogate, Leeds, Wetherby and Ilkley. Students attend sessions covering expedition training and programme support on a weekly basis after school every Tuesday during Term Time, before heading off for their Expedition in the Spring/Summer term. Timing are reasonably flexible but tend to be from 4.30-6.00pm.
Once Gold is completed, participants attend St James’s Palace and receive their Award directly from HRH Prince Edward in person, certainly a day to remember. Many Gateways pupils have already had the honour of being presented at St James’ Palace.
The Open Award Centre Programme usually starts in September with an Open Information Evening for both parents and students. Training begins in early October. Please click on the Open Award Poster below for more information.
The Open Award Centre is supported by fully qualified Mountaineering Instructors who are all endorsed by D of E.
